Keeping The Licks Straight In My Head

From pickn5 on 10/24/2014 4:38:53 AM

Since April 2014, I've been working through Murphy's Beginning Banjo Track. When I got to Two Dollar Bill I started to have trouble keeping the licks from Do Lord, Worried Man, and Two Dollar Bill straight in my head. I had to keep going back to the lessons on each tune to refresh my memory each day. Two days ago, I finally got them straight. Old age creeping up on me, or normal? Now it will be on to Foggy Mountain Breakdown, a favorite of mine when listening to it picked by Earl. Keep picking.

Totally normal. To keeps the licks straight you pretty much have to have the words in your head. So learn the words!!

Thanks Casey, I do take yours and Murphy's advice and try and learn the words. It does help, now if only I could sing.

Sing the words, I remember Murphy emphasizing that. You "gotta" sing along. Have fun and best of luck to you.

Thanks Steve, it really does help and I do try to sing along at least in my head.

Somebody gave me some good advice once, I think it was Gary "Biscuit" Davis, who said to give each lick you come up with or are taught its own name. We already do that in learning Earl's licks/rolls anyway, i.e., foggy Mountain Breakdown lick...

Dave, thanks for your comment. The biggest problem for me on those 3 tunes was that they sound alike. I went back and kept playing them over and over referencing the lesson videos when needed and finally got them straight in my head. I started working on Foggy Mountain Breakdown a couple of days ago. I think I'm going to be a while on that one. As long as I'm enjoying the banjo, I'm good to go. Keep picking.
