Interesting Tidbit

Been playing/trying since 2008, been using MM, as well as other resources, more or less the whole time.  Anyway, I keep a banjo at work and play at lunch most days.  There is a man who works here, and is in my building from time to time.  He is quite a musician, banjo, guitar, bass, and plays on stage.  Anyway, another of my buddies was in my office and I was playing a little.  The musician stops by, asks what I'd been playing.  I told him Salt Creek (learned from Beginning Banjo 2 DVD).  He said show me what you got, so I played it, I'm still an advanced beginner, but I did okay.  I was amazed when he said "Wow, that's a pretty hard/flashy version of that."  He was really impressed with the F-shape pull-offs and the Old Joe Clark Lick.  Said most pickers he plays with, do it simpler.  This guy sounds great when he plays.  He then showed me the way he normally plays it, with a couple of simpler licks.  Which will be great to substitute, for an occasional change of pace.  I guess the point I want to make, is the way Murphy teaches us these songs, may not have the hardest arrangements, BUT they aren't DUMBED down either.  I was very proud, when he said he was impressed.  Normally, I just let him play and I listen, he's really good.  But, I have a limited number of songs I know, whereas he can play just about anything you can name, or it seems that way.  Maybe as your song catalog grows, you have to dial back on difficulty.  That being said, I've been working on the Kickstart DVD, so give me a while, show me a chord chart, and I will play anything LOL  Thank you to all the Henrys, I appreciate you all!

	maplebridge48 says: 1/30/2015 7:31:54 AM Thanks for your post. Actually, on our Beginnign Banjo DVDs 1 and 2, Murphy is primarily teaching Earl Scruggs' versions of the tunes. As you say, this does mean that they are not extremely complex, but it also means that they are good professional arrangements of the tunes, and not "beginners' versions" that you'd need to re-learn later on. It also means that they're easier to learn and to improvise on, since you're learning them lick-by-lick and can substitute licks when you learn to do that. Good luck with the banjo!
