Beginning Banjo Track Question

From pickn5 on 12/17/2015 7:11:47 AM

I have been following the old track and I'm up to John Hardy. Do I continue on or switch to the updated track? Either way, I will keep picking.

I'd go back and jump into the new track, but either way it's up to you. As long as you're playing!

Thanks Casey. I have all the required DVD's and have done a little with the Vamping DVD and full chords. I will print out the new track today and start. Merry Christmas to you and all your family.

Hi Jeff, When I when through this self study phase Murphy hadn't laid out the road map. I worked my way through Beg 1 & 2 then Jam Session Standards. As I recall I hopped around a lot after that as new DVDs became available. Some lessons I skipped, but found later on I needed to go back and learn those lessons. Try not to think in terms of learning tunes, instead think about how the elements of the lesson are furthering your knowledge and skill. Every new lick is another new tool in your toolbox.

Archie, thanks, I do pay attention to the licks and chords. The light bulb came on a couple of years ago when by mistake I played the wrong lick but in the right chord on a tune. It still sounded good. I've gone through Beg 1 and Misfits. Next is Beg 2 for me. I'm not following the Track now as I have some different banjo goals. I'm having fun and that's the whole point anyway. Keep picking.

Hi Jeff

I didn't like the Misfit's DVD most of the lessons are very similar with minor variations and I found it a little boring. Later on Murphy points back to lessons learned on that DVD so it's worth while spending time learning those licks. I had to revisit those lessons many times. Once you get into Jam Session Standards DVD you really see the benefits of working through Beg 1 & 2.

I also took a break from playing in G and worked through some of the lessons in the Key of C on the Wildwood Flower and Soldiers Joy DVDs those are so much fun.
