Finally Jammed and didn't pass out!

From tonywnj on 7/30/2011 9:38:15 PM

To start,  I didn't think of myself being a banjo player.  I didn't think I had it yet.  You guys know what I'm talking about.  I had the rolls and the slides but that *something* was missing from my playing.  Well, about a month ago, my bro calls and tells me that he knows some guys that want to start a country band.  They wanted me; I play banjo and mando, of course they do.  But I had to warn them I wasn't that good on the jo.  To my surprise during our first practice,  I was wondering who was playing banjo in those songs coming from the cabinets from the PA system.  Apparently, under pressure, I am a banjo player.  I then went to a campground where a 3 guys play old country, e.g. George Jones under the pavilion Saturday nights- they were "the Band".  I asked if I could play with them and they told me I was welcome to.  Again, I warned them of my lack of skills/experience.  Then they decide to pull out "Rocky Top"- A song I happen to know with no proficiency.  I was keeping up very well during the verses and chorus, but then , along with the obvious setup, he says the words that made me nearly pass out, "pick that banjo!".  And there was my time to sink of swim.  Well, finding myself under pressure again,  I pulled it off with conviction.  It was so sweet, we played it 3 times that night.  With all of that said,  opposed to my previous insecurities, I'm going out looking to play with people.  I never knew my potential and capabilities until I had put myself in these situations where I had to not make an A$$ out of myself.  I have read some other posts about not being good enough yet to play with people.  Don't be intimidated, if you need to simplify the picking to a Fwd roll to keep up, so be it.  I thought I would just share my recent experiences and hope you all have the adrenaline rush of playing those breaks.  Good luck all.
