So, I play clawhammer to start. I've played bass guitar for a while and had ease with playing literally any style with anybody with confidence. With the banjo I've always thought I''d be a lone wolf playing for my own self enjoyment/therapy haha! but I have been wanting to further it for a while, feeling more serious about my playing banjo and having a feeling to share it while feeling at least a little skilled knowing no-one else around that plays banjee. I've always had trouble with certain keys being a clawhammer kinda guy, like E majior for example. I strive to be as flexible as i can but was very self concious of jamming on banjo, being E usually my go to key or whatever. So my sister invited this guy ive known a little over to hang out and told him to bring his guitar. So i'm like oh crap, since i knew he was really good. He plays like jammy almost funky riffs and such. Totally dig it but I knew this was going to be the test. So I got out some chairs figured on picking two chords or so to get acclimated since we never jammed together. mind you this person does not listen to old time banjo or the like. So he goes how bout G? and I go BEAUTIFUL! we start out on a Johnny Cash like rhythm to get the flow and it was going well. I felt like I was getting my bearings. The jam turned out being surreal! straight up like jam band style almost, with almost Jack Johnson like strumming which was great for free form plucking. I highly recommend giving it a try for clawhammer. Get a drop-thumby rhythm in there holding out chords and your set! SMILING EAR TO EAR. I've always loved the sound of my jo but to hear the sweet melodies shared with another was a connection that almost made me think the instruments just wanted to talk to each other, like a hey how you doin? I get a little obsessed sometime bout my jo, love it to death, and I'm really glad I got to share it for the first time with open mindedness an reign with gloriousness HAHAHAH! too much fun.
