"ODE" on eBay

From boulderfolkie on 1/14/2017 8:38:55 AM

There's a model '21' on eBay at the moment which doesn't appear to have any ser. # on the stick or any moulding or engraved grade or model number on the pot. I advised the seller that it was probably a Baldwin ODE and not a Boulder ODE. Was I wrong?

I think the earliest have sand cast rims without model numbers. Correct me if I'm wrong.

My Ode Model 21 is #54. It has four number 54's stamped on the dowel stick, one on each side. Those early 21s had the 'grade' stamped in a small letter on the head stock. No extras or moulding and nothing engraved on the pot, which is sandcasted as jun3machina stated, The pot has no "sound chamber" or tone ring with holes in it just a straight vertical wall.

I looked at the one on eBay you mentioned, boulderfolkie, it appears to be a Boulder Ode, later in production. (The seller mentions the serial # 760 is on one side of the dowel stick.)The pot is more like the model thirty series, but seems authentic. The Grover tuners have to be a later replacement imho, but not certain of that. It's worth what they are asking, but in this very slooowwww LN market, I bet it could be had for less. :)

PS-- I meant to add it looks more like a Model 33.

Curious about the sound differences between this and say a later 33. I thought the pot was a seties 30, mislabeled as a 21. But I'm not expert. There's also a 33 for auction as well...Look at this on eBay ebay.com/itm/272516502323

Pretty sure any serial number under #2071 is considered boulder and not balwin ;)

Oops..I missed where he listed a serial#...of course it's a Boulder ODE...I just checked my #10...all the posted info here checks out. It'll be interesting to see how it ends...I've see many posts on different sites with folks writing how they "long for one of those ODE aluminum pot banjos"...now's their chance!

Chuck Ogsbury is alleged to have said the Sandcast Series 30, 52 Hole rims were the best sounding rims.
I have Ser. #769. It is virtually identical to this one including the Grover guitar style tuners & raised head.
My opinion is its a bargain at te\he asking price.

are there any records of the pre-serial number system? i would love to break down the 2,000 or so original ODE's prior to the sale of the company to see how many of each style was manufactured...

I ended up purchasing this. It's a beauty all around. I try to take some pictures to share. :)

Linked by 35planar 7 years ago: Looking for an ODE 5-string neck, pre-Baldwin, dowel stick or no dowel stick, long or standard, tuners or none as long as the truss rod, frets, and wood are decent with no twist. I know, seems futile.
