Model C ODE/BALDWIN tenor

From Joven on 10/2/2018 12:56:02 PM

Good afternoon friends

This question probably has been asked, but if you please point me in that direction, it would be appreciated.

Just purchased an ODE/BALDWIN Model C tenor, Very nice banjo, it came with a little too much bowed neck. It came with the heel adjustment wrench, but as I inserted in the heel and felt the gear adjustment I noticed it was very loose. It did not seem to do much adjustment after a couple of 1/4 turns. I kept turning a bit every day for the past week. It seems to be straighter. Am i doing it right? Was the adjustment gear supposed to be that loose to start with?

thank you for your help

Ivan,
You have a Burnes truss rod , a gear box in the heel. Look on my home page under "media" , my photos show the rod & gear box. It works like any reduction gears , you turn several times on one end & the other end moves once. You are doing it correct as you can see improvement & if you go too far you can go back a little.
The bowed neck may be due to traveling , the previous weather conditions & your atmosphere conditions. Once it settles , you probably won't need to adjust it.
Congratulations on your banjo.
Tommy

Linked by 35planar 7 years ago: Looking for an ODE 5-string neck, pre-Baldwin, dowel stick or no dowel stick, long or standard, tuners or none as long as the truss rod, frets, and wood are decent with no twist. I know, seems futile.
