hello, and a few questions..

From jun3machina on 6/24/2016 12:16:41 PM

hi there,

i just found this group after reading up on a bunch of threads that came up when i did a search for ODE.

i just picked this banjo up on a whim off ebay. Not knowing anything at all at the time about ODE banjo's...i just liked the look of it.

Since then i have learned a bit about the brands history, the build of these banjos, etc. and I took this one apart, fixed a loose dowel and a neck crack and reassembled. it's a beauty to play on.

i have a thread in the collectors corner, but thought I would put it here as well, since this group seems to be specifically aimed at ODE lovers.

I had different responses in collectors corner in regards to the neck and how complete it may or may not be. I was just curious if anyone could offer up an opinion in here. It would be much appreciated.

the thread is here: http://www.banjohangout.org/topic/319458

and i have pictures on my profile. not sure how to put them into a group post..

Hi jun3, I saw your thread when you first put it up and thought about inviting you here. I'm glad you found us.

I looked at your banjo pics and can offer an opinion, although not anything like an expert one. I've just had several ODEs over the years and they are my main banjos. IMHO, the pot and hardware are Ode. But I don't believe the neck is Ode at all, and I'll explain: 1) I have never seen an older Ode neck that wasn't laminated in at least 3 layers. That was done from the beginning so that the neck wouldn't warp even without a truss rod. 2) the fit of the fingerboard to the neck isn't done like anything Ode. 3) the peghead is "sort of" shaped like an Ode paddle head, but not quite faithfully. 4) the overall shape of the neck is very "home made" to me, particularly the heel which doesn't look like an Ode design. Now these are just my opinions from the photos. Not saying the neck is bad AT ALL, and the inlay is pretty. 5) The tailpiece is not Ode, nor is it one of the old stock banjo hardware tailpieces that Ode used in the first batches of banjos.

At the same time, it doesn't surprise me that the sound you are getting is fabulous, That's the biggest worst kept secret about true Odes, they sound better than anything else.(hee hee)

Please keep us updated about what you learn about your Ode.

And welcome! Glad you joined us!!!

Linked by 35planar 7 years ago: Looking for an ODE 5-string neck, pre-Baldwin, dowel stick or no dowel stick, long or standard, tuners or none as long as the truss rod, frets, and wood are decent with no twist. I know, seems futile.
