Hi there - I realise OT 3-finger probably includes everything from Dock Boggs to Charlie Poole to fledgling bluegrass! Anyway, I'm not really hung up on definitions - I just love the sound of fingerpicked banjo in all its forms. I thought I'd share some music that I've enjoyed and look forward to hearing your recommendations. (It would be great to get a virtual jukebox going but I'm not sure copyright will allow!)
Old-Time Music from South-west Virginia - compilation with early Dock Boggs and Hayes Shepherd. And Old Time Mountain Banjo - great 'showcase' tunes by Marion Underwood and Frank Jenkins (both on County Records)
McGee Brothers and Arthur Smith: Old Timers of the Grand Opry. (I love this cd - great collection of fiddle tunes, rags - has Needlecase, Snowdrop and Jim Sapp Rag)
The Library Of Congress Banjo Collection. Raymond Swinney is on this..

Also, I love Obray Ramsey's Rain and Snow (available on the Music Never Stopped - Roots of Grateful Dead). He played a kind of simplified scruggs style and has an appealing mournful voice! Some outofprint lps are available at
