Just got my mitts on a new book by Joseph Weidlich: Old-time String Band Banjo styles.http://elderly.com/books/items/49-123693.htm
It's a useful resource for players interested in pre-Scruggs picking. It basically features excerpts of banjo back-up for different banjo styles. There's no play along cd but the idea is that you locate the original tunes yourself to hear how they should sound - unfortunately, it doesn't have a proper discography but I have discovered that many of the tunes featured are on the 1928 Ernest Stoneman cd and the Old Hat Records compilations: In the Pines/Music from the Lost Provinces.
