wow

From skiptomylou on 5/8/2014 1:31:23 PM

this is the first chance i've had to check in and i'm amazed at all the input so far - so many interesting discussions going on - thanks to you all for coming and joining the group and for your enthusiasm in sharing so far,

i did not quite make my hour and half last night - had to work late and by the time i got in, got dinner and got started it was quite late and i don't like to play too late and disturb my neighbours - you can hear through the walls. i did about an hour though. i practiced a couple of songs i learned before but which i wanted to improve on, however, to be honest, i don't think i got the best out of the time spent as i felt exhausted and a little low. i'm  disappointed that i failed at my goal on the first night! but today's a new day and another chance to do better,

hope everyone's practice is going well,

best

Jill

I tell students that they should set their goals in a fashion that is manageable in their lives. If a 30 minute time slot does not or cannot emerge -- around things like work, diapers, cooking and laundry -- they set a goal of picking up the banjo for 5 minutes, running over some chords, pushing through a tune, and then get back to life without feeling as though you have shortchanged yourself or failed to meet a goal.

It's hard to practice sometimes, cause life gets in the way. Even if you did not meet your goal, at least you practiced some! It is better to practice 15 minutes every day than to practice 8 hours for just one day per week.

I would definitely recommend reevaluating your practice time, Jill, it's no good to feel disappointed after playing! Agreeing with what G says above--consistent practice in small intervals is great. You could hyperfocus on one tune, or practice goal, or just give yourself 15 minutes to play through a few favorite tunes and work out any rough spots. No problem reevaluating!

I don't keep track of time but I try to play enough that I feel like I've pushed ahead a little bit on something every day.

There's a really neat practice idea on one of the violin websites called "Virtuous Moments." The basic idea is to identify small things to work on and then work on each of them for 3 minutes each which can be done in one sitting or (I would say) whenever it's convenient throughout the day.

I've only tried it a few times, but I was surprised how much could be accomplished in a few minutes. I'm also surprised how quickly someone on the stove will burn if I try to use that wait time to practice. : )
