review of week

From skiptomylou on 5/17/2014 3:32:56 AM

as planned, kept practices in early part of week to a shorter/more manageable time of - 15-30 mins. But thurs, fri, and today have done an hour, or just over.

still working on shady grove, plus, for some variation, re-visiting/revising a couple of tunes i learned before.

plan to continue with shady grove over the next week - work at it till i can play it really fluently without mistakes and with good timing. i'm also trying to think of another tune i can go through the same process with - work out a bit myself which i can play up the neck. has to be something simple, not too tricky, but a tune i love too. i've noticed i really need to feel excited about a tune in order to keep up the motivation to practice it a lot.

after a rocky start when this group began, i'm now enjoying my practice a lot more and finding it a lot more productive and fun.

hope everyone's practices are going well - looking forward to hearing all you updates!

all the best

Jill

I think you and I hit upon the same nail-when you can make practice productive/effective and fun, it really is the best motivation to practice. I used to barely be able to stomach 15-20 minute practices, but lately I find myself forgetting the time, and before I know it, I've practiced an hour or two.

Agreed. there's nothing more satisfying than when you've forgotten the time - i almost feel on a high when that happens.

glad your practices are going well too - looking forward to hearing an update,
best

Yup. Pretty neat. I experience that settling-in feeling, too, and once I'm in the zone, it's hard to want to leave it.

Have you picked a new tune yet? Are you looking for something like Shady Grove (to expand on what you've learned from it) or something totally different?

Definitely good to get in the zone! That's why I like to put a timer on, so I'm not watching the clock. You'll have to post a little video or audio when you're done mastering Shady Grove, Jill! Keep up the good work.

Hi Cyndy -i'm thinking about banjo pickin' girl - thought that would be relatively simple, and fun. although, don't know whether i'd be better doing another sawmill tuning one - then that would help me learn the neck in that tuning. mmhhh.....

sure will arran, will try and post a vid when i'm a bit happier with shady grove - have recorded a few as i've been going along, but just for practice, thanks so much for the encouragement
best

Sorry about the mis-spelling Aaron - it's been a long day at work,

Don't feel bad. A co-worker mispelled my name as "Gendorf" instead of Genford on Friday. I was hoping I might have secretly developed wizard powers, but no go.
