Weekly update

From Zischkale on 7/14/2014 9:22:33 AM

Hope y'all are doing well. Jill, good luck on that move-in, hopefully it goes smoothly and you get some good weather for outdoor pickin'!

I managed to play fiddle a couple times last week, going to be more consistent this week. Working on my Tune of the Week for this Friday, and having a great time with it. Y'all ought to sign up for one. I won't be near as elaborate as the last one (Ragtime Annie, really cool post), but I think it's a great melody.

Other than that been working through every song I know, want to start being able to play a decent little set when it's required of me. So I've got my repertoire type out and am playing away, which has been a lot of fun. Slowing a lot of stuff down to work on accuracy.

Any updates, or good news, or great picking experiences?

I need to get back on track with my practice, so I can do an update. I've been keeping my banjo by the couch, so I can practice while I watch tv or if I have a spare minute, but I've been slack on practicing the fiddle. I've finally got Angelina Baker down pat on banjo, working in Colored Aristocracy, Cluck Old Hen, and the Cuckoo/Jack of Diamonds, trying to commit them memory and get them cleaner.
BTW, I saw your video where you covered the Led Zep song. It was awesome and reminded me that I need to practice more.

sounds like you're putting a lot of work in. good idea to slow things down, sometimes i think it can help you appreciatea tune in a whole different way, as well as help accuracy. i love the tune of the week - it's great to hear a bit about the history of a song and all different versions etc.
i've let my practice schedule drop a bit in terms of not really working on the original goals i set out - however have still been playing - been pickin' while watching a dvd to chill out and take a break from clearing out/packing every now and then - otherwise would go mad,
best
well done on Angelina Baker Genford, such a lovely tune

Sounds like you're going strong, G--how much fun is Cuckoo? I need to add Colored Aristocracy soon, you're right about that tune being cool. Thanks for the good word about the Zep song! Shoot, I botched some of the lyrics, I need my practice too. But it's all about enjoyment of playing whatcha got right now.

I gotta put the work in now, Jill! I'll probably wind up with a kid within the next few years, then all this spare practice time is out the window. Slowing a tune down is great, I've been starting every practice with Iverson's drop-thumbing drills, too. Also been messing with the position of my thumb and trying to work on my motion, so it's not all wrist. Would like to make it more ergonomic. Yeah, I don't envy you for the moving process. I've only recently really settled into the new apartment. Mostly that's my fault though, since I tend to hold on to junk and have a hard time throwing stuff out. Glad you're unwinding with some tunes.
