trying to get back on track

From skiptomylou on 9/23/2014 2:29:11 PM

not posted for a while - i have been playing some over the last while - but it's been patchy - what with stress of moving house, and then more recently the excitement/tension of Scottish referendum here followed by the depression of the result (i'm still going through the grieving process). i do have a bad habit of getting  obsessional about things and the recent bid for independence is an example. time to move on and channel my energy into something more productive - like banjo!

so with that in mind, did just over an hour yesterday and an hour today - still working away on my roscoe holcomb style mainly, but a bit of clawhammer too. don't really have a clear practice strategy just now - just revising tunes i already know (my one  goal just now  is to try and do a couple of recordings at the weekend to post). also, been sometimes just trying to work out the odd tune that comes into my head.

well hopefully can keep this up and save my sanity! i'm aiming to do about an hour a day,

all the best for now

Jill

Hi Jill,

Nice to hear from you. Sounds like there's been quite the excitement in your life recently. Banjo should have a soothing effect. : )

I'd love for you to post some new recordings. It's always really fun to hear people play. Good way for our group to get to know each other.

I need to give that a try again, too, one of these days.

Thanks -- for both comments!

Don't you just love it when you get in the relaxing banjo groove when it's just you and the instrument and it feels like it could go on forever?

Despite the results, it looked to be a smooth and sensible voting process, and a surprisingly large voter turnout (at least compared to what we see here in the States).

Glad you're keeping up the Holcomb style--are you using a thumbpick and/or index fingerpick? I'm doing a little practice drill every night, once through without picks and one with, to build some dexterity in the style (sort of like the drop thumb exercise I'd do when I started clawhammer). Also listening to the Untamed Sense... Roscoe Holcomb CD. It's a simple style, but the meat of it is all in that groove--he was a player with a great sense of timing.

Keep up the good work! You and G ought to post some snippets of audio some time, like Cyndy does on her blog. It's a great exercise!

And I think I mean "especially" compared to what we see here in the States!

yes, the turnout was amazing - and many people who had never been involved in politics ever before because they felt 'what's the point?' have been out campaigning, many now even joining political parties - one party has doubled its membership over the last week and another has had thousands joining. so, great that people are now feeling they want to get involved and that they can make a difference.

i haven't actually been using pics, although i know he did so i guess i'm not strictly playing holcomb style. was just thinking last night i should have a go with pics. will maybe do tonight, although the softer sound without is easier for me to sing over. roscoe certainly had the voice to sing over that loud percussive sound he got out the banjo! have been listening to untamed sense too - magical.

yeh, will need to work out how to post clips, as i say, i'm hoping to have a go at a video this weekend, see how it goes,
all the best, and thanks
Jill

Jill,

Sorry my reply is late. But good on you for getting back in the groove of playing!Sometimes it is good to reflect on stuff you already know and improve on it, rather than moving on to new stuff.
