progress update

From skiptomylou on 11/2/2014 1:11:11 PM

have been trying to learn roscoe holcomb style - here's a video to show my progress - it's a version of the dylan song spanish boots of leather.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zusYxirtGeM

it was inspired by a version by another banjohangout member - have already mentioned it in the group

it's here: http://www.banjohangout.org/archive/274969

all the best, jill

Very nice! It seems to me like you've chosen a style that really complements your singing. I like that!

That is an amazing video, Jill! I must say that I am not familiar with Roscoe Holcomb or his style and would like to learn a bit more. Were there any particular resources you used (books, videos, websites, etc.) to get that style down?

How come you haven't yet posted any of that lovely singing? C'mon, you gotta share gifts, friend! There's a cool lilting rhythm you get out of that banjo style that makes for good accompaniment. Good work.

G, get yourself to Youtube for a sampling of Holcomb right away! Good starter -- (youtube.com/watch?v=goqrpM4qvN4). I'd recommend the Mike Seeger tutorial on Youtube (poor audio quality, and audio only for that matter, but it got me started) for insight into Roscoe's style. But what Jill did here you won't find so easily--she developed this style based on the link to Spanish Boots above. On top of that, you certainly ain't going to hear such dulcet tones out of Holcomb.

Keep up the good work, Jill!

thanks so much for the great feedback friends,
Gen - Mike Seeger's series of banjo DVDs are a brilliant resource. i've used those mostly for my learning. he goes into roscoe holcomb style and a whole host of two & three finger old time styles. the thing i like about him is that he has a very clear, easy to understand way of teaching. he also plays the tunes very slowly, so you can (eventually) play along with them, as well as up to speed. they come with tab booklets. he also tells you a bit about the main exponent of a particular style, and he plays an amazing array of wonderful banjos, each with an interesting story (for example, he has the actual banjo which once belonged to Dock Boggs). it is really a fascinating collection, as well as educational. I'm constantly singing the praises of this collection. as Aaron says, some of the lessons are also on youtube.
i've got a video on my profile page of me playing Molly Dear, which i learned from the same series of DVDs.
The DVD with Molly Dear on it is called Old Time Banjo Styles (he has guest on this including the amazing and beguiling Etta Baker, plus Joe and Odell Thompson, among others). and the other DVDs are called Southern Banjo Styles, Volume 1, 2 and 3.

The book Old-Time Mountain Banjo, by Art Rosenbaum, also goes into Roscoe Holcomb style a little and teaches the lovely tune Hills of Mexico in this style (which i'm also trying to learn at the moment). welcome back! hope the uke playing went well,
best
Jill

Is that his Old Time Banjo styles series or Southern Banjo styles series?

EDIT: Nevermind. I just reread your post and saw that you mentioned Old Time Banjo styles! Thanks, Jill. And that was some amazing singing. Look forward to hearing more!
