here is a video, as a little progress report, of a tune i learned before but have been re-visiting - Bright Sunny South. it's played two-finger index lead style (well , my attempt at that anyway). it's another one i learned from a Mike Seeger DVD. The vocal is a little strained, i need to re-tune so i can sing this maybe a semi- tone or tone lower, which i think would be a lot more comfortable for me.

Yeah! Excellent work, it's the perfect treatment for this piece, and you nail the vocals as usual. It's a bit different than Holcomb style, dialed back a bit, which is just right for the song. Makes great use of the 1st string as a drone. Awesome work.
Plus I'll always dig how you folks pronounce "land"!

yes! totally agree with you on the 'forced preparation' philosophy.
one of the reasons i've made a couple of videos lately is that, following on from doing a couple for the banjo challenge, i realised that preparing for it and trying to record it was good practice in itself. i do tend to get lazy after the preliminary learning of a tune - once i feel i've 'got it' . i lose my initial excitement a little and don't challenge myself as much. but of course, if i know i want to show people a video it forces me to pay that bit more attention to the trickier bits i might have 'skipped/glossed' over before. those little mistakes i like to pretend are not happening! so, in short, yes, i've found that trying to make videos actually helps my practice.

Could you please post the tuning and possibly the basic chord progression? I would like to give this a go. And I never noticed your pronounciation of "land" but noticed it rhymed with "again".

Don't think too much about the pronunciation, being unaware of it is what makes it cool! There's this song I dig by Scottish band Frightened Rabbit called "Swim Until You Can't See Land." Always appreciated the dialect in that one.

Hi rgoad, it's just sawmill tuning Gdgcd - just tune it up or down to suit your voice, if you want to sing along with it. mike seeger teaches it tuned down to Fcfa#c. i think i went a bit lower than that - Ebeab - so i could sing it higher. it doesn't really have chords - you are just playing the melody notes. you could check youtube as some of seeger's lessons are on that. let me know how you get on - and if i can help any more with finding the melody
Hi Aaron - i love dialects too and always pick up on things like that - i guess it's one of those things we don't notice when we do it ourselves!!
