internet-free week

From skiptomylou on 2/8/2015 10:43:25 AM

Hi all, hope everyone's practice is going well - did anyone set any banjo related New Years resolutions, and how are you getting on with them? one of mine's was to sign up for online lessons, which i've not done yet - hopefully will do that next month though. i',ve practiced almost every day this year - except three or four days when i wasn't feeling too well. have been learning tunes from the art rosenbaum art of the mountain banjo book and it's been really good fun.

I'm going to have an internet-free week, from tomorrow. i'm hoping it will help me use my time more productively/creatively, and that it will help my banjo practice and playing. i might come online if i get stuck with something and need a specific answer to something,  but i'm not going to just browse to 'pass the time'. i'm hoping to get lots of practice time in! am also going to not watch TV for a week - in fact am going to try and have a 'media-free' week altogether. i'm looking forward to 'emptying the mind' from all the clutter usually filling it.

well, will report back on how i got on in a week's time!

all the very best - and keep on keepin' on!

Jill

Hi Jill,

Internet-free sounds good! My work (genealogy research) requires me to use the Internet and I find it's a breath of fresh air to be able to get away from it.

Found out a couple of weeks ago that we're moving to Southern California -- my husband was invited to apply for a job and received an offer -- so I've been scrambling to weed out clutter and get the house ready to sell. It means lots of radio and not as much computer and I'm liking it. : )

Maybe you don't want to say publicly, but what kind of online lessons are you thinking about? I've done Skype lessons for quite a while (coming up on three years, maybe?) and I really like it. It's convenient and it's given me access to the perfect lesson situation.

Enjoy your time off!

Cyndy

Hi Cyndy, congratulations on your husband's new job - sounds like an exciting move ahead.

yes, it was skype lessons i was thinking of - for the convenience (i would have to travel quite a bit for a 'live' lesson, plus, difficult to fit it in round work). i enjoy learning from DVDs etc -but i feel i need a bit of feedback as to where i'm going right/wrong.
interesting to hear you've found skype lessons useful - that's encouraged me to go for it,
have a great week!
Best
Jill

I unofficially set a New Year's resolution to get to at least one jam per month (they hold two a month) -- and so far so good, went to the first one last week! Excited for you regarding online lessons--seem to be some really prime choices. You may ask G more about that. I wonder if Dan Gellert is still offering lessons...?

Media-free week sounds like a decent idea, a fast for the mind. I definitely think it pays to take the banjo somewhere quiet once in awhile, without a screen or instruction books--I've felt I'm getting into a rut practicing in a room with blaring TV.

Congrats to your and your husband, Cyndy -- that's a hell of a move! I hope it all goes smoothly--a big plus will be no more blizzards to worry about.

G, thanks for posting that Holcomb video--I watched it a few times before when I was trying to figure out his 2-finger style (he sticks heavy to clawhammer in the video, but I can't really complain). I need to watch it again, give it a closer look.
