How's It Going?

From VioletMoon on 5/25/2015 9:34:49 PM

Just a quick note to keep us going here.

One of the perks of living in California now is being able to spend time practicing outside and I've really been enjoying it.

I took a banjo workshop over the weekend and we focused on Kyle Creed's Darling Nellie Gray. I'd sight read a version of it from the Leftwich book but I hadn't gotten around to learning it and that was the push that I needed to go to work on it.

I've been playing along with Kyle Creed's recording slowed down to 35-50% and I'm finding it's a really great way for me to learn. I'm finding I can follow along pretty well (and when I can't, I can just stop and take the time to figure out what's happening and then go back to it as a whole) and I can really feel the groove. I like that!

So that's my update. What's yours?!

Cyndy

i love darling nellie gray Cyndy. worked out a very simple version long time ago - might have to re-visit and try and develop it a bit. will need to check out creed's recording too. my practice has been woeful of late, but have been trying to do some writing, and, what with work commitments etc, it's difficult to fit in everything. am going up to Glencoe on walking holiday next week, and after that am going to get stuck back into practice.

Writing! I've been working on a blog post for work all day long. Shouldn't be that hard but it is. Luckily, I enjoy the challenge. : )

Do you sing Darling Nellie Gray? That would be neat to hear.

Enjoy the holiday!

Quick update for me. Been super busy with the wedding approaching and also my new job. Been working on Darlin' Cory and Blackest Crow. I can play both on fiddle to some degree but trying to learn them on banjo has been harder for so,e reason.

Wedding AND a new job? Whew! That sounds really busy. Hope whatever music time you find is relaxing and refreshing! C

yeh, i did sing along to darling nellie gray - hence probably partly why it was a really simple arrangement. good call - that would be a cool one to try again - nothing like a tune you love to get you motivated again!

anyone any ideas on how to maybe make the practice group work better? i wonder if we are all getting as much out of it as we could.. was thinking maybe more regular check-ins or something - then again, don't want to get too prescriptive about it and put people off...i know we are all busy so maybe it is just in the nature of things that the group will be less active in some periods. just thinking aloud here, ha ha,

How to make the practice group work better? I'd say, just keep posting when we have something to share.

I've enjoyed getting to know everyone through the posts that have been made and I enjoy hearing what's up with everyone. I also like having a place where I can comfortably share the things I'm working on and thinking about. Thanks for that!

would agree Cyndy - has been really nice getting to know everyone and hearing about people's experiences/lives. guess i am just feeling frustrated at my own lack of time to do all the things i want. well, set off for my holiday tomorrow, so, hopefully will come back feeling refreshed and motivated.
thanks so much to everyone for contributing to the group,
(hope the new job and wedding plans are going well Gen!)
very best

Not sure why my last comment posted 3 different times? Anyway, I just want to say that this group has meant a lot for me. Lately, time has been an issue for me. I can't really sit down for an hour and "practice". I can pick up the banjo or fiddle for 10 minutes here, 20 minutes there-play a couple tunes when I can, so I don't get rusty. However, reading everybody's progress encourages me to keep at it, so that don't lose what I've learned already. When things get a bit more settled, I'll try to post a vid or at least write an update entry for the group.
