practice - and peggy seeger

From skiptomylou on 7/10/2015 1:38:17 PM

well, after a bit of a break i'm back to practicing more regularly and really enjoying it again. i went through a phase where, the few times i did pick up the banjo, i somehow wasn't enjoying it much!! a first for me.

anyway, main songs i'm working on  are old molly hare, bonapart crossing the rhine, forked deer, and rocking the cradle - they are all things i've learned before and am re-visiting. i've previously said that i enjoy the learning part of the tune, but don't seem to be able to keep up the same energy/enthusiasm for revising. however, over the last couple of weeks i've discovered the joy of repetition - getting into a real rhythm and going over and over a song again and again - very therapeutic.

am still thinking about getting skype and getting some banjo lessons, but have not got round to that yet - maybe in the next couple of weeks.

also, had the joy of seeing peggy seeger playing with her two sons two weeks ago - they played a whole variety of instruments, as you'd expect, and peggy did a few old banjo tunes like cluck old hen - wow, she was up and down the neck like nobody's business - awesome!! it really inspired me to get stuck in, try and work hard and improve my playing.

hope all is good with everyone,

Jill

Glad to hear all is well, Jill! A lot of your vids that I've seen feature uppicking/2 finger. Do you mainly do those, or do you clawhammer, as well? Anyway, I am glad at least one of us is practicing regularly. Everybody's posts are always so encouraging to me I'll be glad when things settle down for me and I get back on track with my practice.

Hi Jill,

Just reading your post!

I love the way soaking up the energy from a live concert leaves us inspired to work hard on our own music. Sounds like that was just the boost you needed to getting back to enjoying it again. Nice!

Too bad you don't live closer. I could add some fiddle to the tunes you're working on. :)

I've done Skype lessons for 3 years and it works great. I'm about 60 miles away from my teacher now (used to be 2000) but we still meet that way. It'll give you your pick of teachers! Let us know how it goes.

i started off with two-finger, thumb lead, as i read it was the easiest to learn and good for singing along too - then had a go at various other two finger picking styles, then clawhammer - i am mainly working on clawhammer these days. hope the wedding plans etc are going well and that you still manage to get the odd bit of playing time in.

would be awesome to have your fiddle playing on there Cyndi - they say anything is possible these days? distance no object - maybe some way of sending each other files to play over - or - when i get round to getting skype, trying a few duets on that!
