skype lesson

From skiptomylou on 7/31/2015 11:55:12 AM

well, i have finally followed up, what i think was actually my New Year's resolution ha ha! I have got myself hooked up to skype and had a banjo lesson.

it was a great, enjoyable and beneficial experience and was with the incredibly talented Hunter Robertson. He has lots of videos and stuff on here and on youtube, if you've not already heard his playing look him up - truly incredible and i feel really privileged to have got a lesson from him. he also has a lot of interesting ideas about playing and music on his website www.hunterrobertson.com

we worked on a song i'd seen him play on a video - old molly hare. he taught me the entire tune, had me go over and over it and taught me some variations as well.

I'd always thought skype sounded like a weird concept (yes i know i'm behind the times) - the lesson was my first time using it, and i suppose it did seem slightly strange at first. but very quickly it felt completely natural - i think it's a great way to learn.

I have another lesson booked for next week and hope i can continue to have more.

keep on keepin' on pickin'

best

Jill

Nice! Great teacher. Great lesson. Put those two things together and it's always such a happy thing. I'm excited for you!

thanks Cyndy
i was a tiny bit nervous beforehand - but actually it was great fun - thanks for encouraging me to do it - it was hearing of your positive experience with skype lessons that persuaded me to give it a try,
(now i'm skyped up we can maybe have a banjo/fiddle jam some time)

You're welcome! :)

I wonder if we could play together or if latency would be a problem? There's Skype but there's also JamKazam. One of these days, I'd be interested in trying it!

Happy weekend!

Nice call on getting Hunter Robertson for lessons! I have his Unfortunate Puppy DVD--haven't worked with it in awhile, but the dude definitely has chops. Clawhammer and other picking styles as well--if I were you I'd ask him for a how-to on that Uncle Dave Macon 3-finger roll.

Skype's an incredible service for the price (free) -- wonder how the lag was between you and he in the lesson? Haven't looked into JamKazam but have heard of similar types of services. There's gotta be some software that accounts for lag somehow... the idea of having the option to jam online with other BHO'ers sounds like the future to me. A lot of resistance toward the idea of not jamming in person, but couldn't hurt as an option!

yes, i must get the unfortunate puppy DVD.
i wasn't conscious of a time lag in the skype lesson - but then we weren't playing at the same time.
hope your playing is going well Aaron,

Hi Jill. I'm so glad your Skype lesson worked out well! I started out with Skype lessons and did them for several years (mainly because there were no clawhammer teachers in the area of SC where I lived), and it was a great experience. I am not familiar with Hunter, so I am definitely going to check him out! -gen (ps I just got back from my wedding/honeymoon, so I'm a bit late with my comments).

best
