I ran across that iconic b&w photo of a young, fluffy-haired Jerry Garcia sitting with his 5-string in front of a huge US flag. It dawned on me that while the Grateful Dead set dozens of traditional songs in unique Dead-on ways, Jerry never played banjo in those arrangements. All the banjo recordings I've heard of Jerry have sounded very traditional. Unlike his guitar--whose tone and phrasing unmistakeably carry his signature--his banjo sounds right in the midst of all the players one might have heard at the time. I haven't heard much of the pre-Dead Garcia music. Maybe he was setting trends I'm not aware of. By the way, I don't mean to imply that his banjo playing isn't worth listening to. Just that it seems evident to me that he was content to play banjo under the same tent that others played banjo, so to speak. But on guitar, he felt free to roam the universe.
