How to ID Silverspun

From mileszurawell on 11/8/2012 3:07:30 PM

Hey all.

Purchased a 76 Double XX resonator OME a while back. I'm still uncertain whether it has a silverspun tone ring setup or a mastertone-like cast brass tone ring. Can I differentiate the two by looking in the pot, without having to disassemble anything but the resonator? I'm pretty new to banjos so I'm not really knowledgeable as to the different tonality coming from the different tone rings.

I really like the tone either way, I'm just really curious as to what tone ring it has.

Sliverspun is a quite a bit thinner gauge.

On my Triple-X, the inside lip of the ring doesn't meet the top of the rim, unlike a Mastertone-type ring that is supposed to be flush with the top of the rim.

The Silver Spun ring is made to fit a 9/16" -thick rim -- which ALWAYS have bracket shoes. The Silver Chime (cast ring) is made to fit a 3/4"-thick rim. If it has a cast one-piece flange it's ALWAYS a 3/4" rim. But SOME 3/4" rims have shoe-and-plate
construction. (And it will be a full 3/4" at the back of the rim.)

Miles -- I just realized you mentioned you have a 1976 Double X. At that date, it should be a Silver SPUN tonering. Ome introduced the Silver Chime/Golden Chime CAST tonering in 1977.

You can check the production year of your banjo -- by serial number -- on the OME website. Click the "History" link, then click on the "Historic OME Instruments" link.

The serial number range for 1976 is liated as: #1258 to #1519

Sorry -- "liated" should have been "listed".

Thanks Ed! I'd have to check the serial number when I get home but I'm pretty sure it was in the #1400 range. So silver spun it is!
