Sweetgrass vs Southern Cross

From nhigdon11 on 12/20/2016 8:26:08 AM

I am looking to get one of the 2 banjos listed above. Can anyone tell me of their experiences with either one? I am really interested in walnut versions too. It would be great if there were comparisons. But at this point, I will take your thoughts on either one of these banjos. Thank you in advance.

I've played both. The differences are completely cosmetic when the same wood is used for both. There's no difference in tone or playability.
The Southern Cross inlay pattern is newer than the Sweetgrass, and was designed to be symmetrical and more similar to the old Gibson inlay patterns without imitating them directly.
At that time, most of the Ome inlay patterns were like the Sweetrass- asymmetrical and more florid than geometrical.

Both are equally popular, I think, now, so its all a matter of which appeals most to your eye.

Walnut is a good wood; it's less bright than maple, but brighter than mahogany. It's a handsome wood, too. I have more walnut banjos than any other wood in my bunch.
regards,
stanger

No not yet. Slow going on the finances. Hoping soon.
