... must come to an end.
After seven years I decided to call it quits with the Sunbury open mic. It's been a good run, but I need a break.
From being a newbie, it got so I was geting the key and opening the hall, setting up the chairs for the audience and musicians, setting up much of the sound system, playing backup, and arranging mics for the singers.
I developed a couple of hernias and that didn't help - my songs were delivered sitting down.
The last straw came when someone strongly objected to the all acoustic format we agreed to for July and August. For a few years I'd been thinking of leaving, and this was the little nudge I needed. The timing was good, though, 'cause I had two hernia operations last week. Recovery will take a while, and I won't be carrying that heavy banjo for some time.
There's lots I'll miss, but the driving and lifting aren't among them. Now I'll look for something musical to do on a free night of the week.
