Seventh Go...!! - David M

From David M on 6/8/2011 1:27:50 AM

The first and third Wednesdays of every month seem to come round very quickly..! In June already and up I went again in front of a good spread of keen musicians, fortunately I have the nerves a bit more under control now and my concentration is fine, still apprehensive to begin with though seeing my turn coming.. 8-/

I went straight in with Bile Dat Cabbage Down, everyone seems to have a different group of verses to this one but thankfully it went through smoothly and was warmly appreciated. The audience are more than happy to sing along with the chorus so it broke the ice.. :-)

One of my favourite pretty tunes is In The Pines and that was next up. I really love playing this one, it has a mournful sound to a medium waltz beat. I was getting up to go back to my seat when they actually called for MORE..!!!! My head didn't swell too much though as a few people had played 3 that night..

Another lovely song I like to attempt is the Don Williams classic Gypsy Woman. There were a few country singers there and thankfully it went down well. I was the last act before the interval and it was nice to hear a few people having a go playing that tune while others charged their glasses again.

With a few of us hogging the hot seat with 3 songs in the first half, I only had time for the one at the end, which was fine by me..! A song I've played for ever indoors finally got it's public airing - When You And I Were Young Maggie. Probably my favourite song of all time. I chose the slow waltz version and it was a real pleasant surprise to the reaction it got at the end. I only play a soft bare finger picking style but I could hear the quiet singalong going on through the audience all the time...lovely.

A successful evening, I enjoyed all the music and found out that one man's guitar was worth  £12,000..!!

Happy picking and I hope any performances you have lined up all go well. Best wishes......David

P.S... It was great to hear that Ken Perlman will be guesting at the club later in the year during a workshop tour in the UK, I won't be getting up that night..!!... ;-)

David, I'm so proud of you and I always enjoy reading about your performances! What's this about Ken Perlman guesting at the club?? That sounds pretty exciting. Perhaps you can do a duet!

I think Pearlman is at the Folk School here in St. Louis sometimes. Glad to hear it's going well David. I just went to my first BG festival in Dixon, MO. A real eye-opener!

Thanks for getting me out there in the first place Laurie, I still struggle with the performing bit but it seems to smooth out a little now when I get going..!.. ;-)

Ken's been over here to the club before and does a few pubs and clubs around the area whilst over here for workshops I believe. I went to see him in a pub a few miles away about 6 years ago, his banjo was obviously great but his guitar picking was the star showing I thought with such a beautiful style and tone.

I can't see a duet happening somehow, there's plenty of players in the club ahead of me I reckon, but I'll try and wangle a photo with him for the blog. I think it's later in the Summer.

Sorry to hear you didn't make the Florida banjo contest this year Laurie, you'd have walked it.. ;-)

Good to hear from you David, I hope it's all still going well, sounds like you're having a nice time getting out and about, there's definitely a lot of talent on show at festivals, that's for sure..!

Best wishes to you both, good to hear from you...David

Hi Tony, on the case...I only relpied to RatLer's post yesterday about his first public airing, he'd be a fine fellow to add to the ranks..!

Still waiting to hear how your work performance went Tony, I hope it went better than mine. They told me exactly what they thought of me and it put me off for ages..!!
