The first and third Wednesdays of every month seem to come round very quickly..! In June already and up I went again in front of a good spread of keen musicians, fortunately I have the nerves a bit more under control now and my concentration is fine, still apprehensive to begin with though seeing my turn coming.. 8-/
I went straight in with Bile Dat Cabbage Down, everyone seems to have a different group of verses to this one but thankfully it went through smoothly and was warmly appreciated. The audience are more than happy to sing along with the chorus so it broke the ice.. :-)
One of my favourite pretty tunes is In The Pines and that was next up. I really love playing this one, it has a mournful sound to a medium waltz beat. I was getting up to go back to my seat when they actually called for MORE..!!!! My head didn't swell too much though as a few people had played 3 that night..
Another lovely song I like to attempt is the Don Williams classic Gypsy Woman. There were a few country singers there and thankfully it went down well. I was the last act before the interval and it was nice to hear a few people having a go playing that tune while others charged their glasses again.
With a few of us hogging the hot seat with 3 songs in the first half, I only had time for the one at the end, which was fine by me..! A song I've played for ever indoors finally got it's public airing - When You And I Were Young Maggie. Probably my favourite song of all time. I chose the slow waltz version and it was a real pleasant surprise to the reaction it got at the end. I only play a soft bare finger picking style but I could hear the quiet singalong going on through the audience all the time...lovely.
A successful evening, I enjoyed all the music and found out that one man's guitar was worth £12,000..!!
Happy picking and I hope any performances you have lined up all go well. Best wishes......David
P.S... It was great to hear that Ken Perlman will be guesting at the club later in the year during a workshop tour in the UK, I won't be getting up that night..!!... ;-)
