Funny How Things Change

From Paul R on 8/27/2011 3:30:11 AM

The weekend of the 13th/14th (August) I was away, so I missed the jam. Then, last Friday (my first time back) I was about an hour late getting there. I couldn't believe it - when I walked in, the audience gave me a round of applause, while someone was up performing! Maybe it was because there was such a small turnout of musicians.

Last night the sound was quite loud. Maybe it's because we had three guitarists with amplifiers, plus a third plugged into the sound system, plus the electric bass. Sometimes it takes several songs to sort things out. We were struggling with it at the beginning.

It was quite the contrast to the previous week. This time most of the "regulars" were there, plus a couple of newcomers (who were obviously experienced). Once the sound got worked out, things settled down and we could enjoy each other's music. Funny how it changes week to week.

Good to hear you're having a great time Paul, I worry about the odd audience comment, if they applauded someone else coming in during my song I think I'd die there and then..!!.. :-)

Oh for a sound system to boost my bare finger efforts...

It was totally wierd. I don't recall it ever happening before. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that I get there an hour early and set up the sound system (?).

Having the system is great, but it's another thing you need to learn how to use.

We used to do straight acoustic - too bad! The a mic and mini PA JUST for voices, then - "You should get a nice pick-up for that Guild" - we were a band again! We stopped and are back to acoustic, maybe one mic, bluegrass style....:)

Oue system consists of three mics for vocals plus one instrumental mic for whomever is taking his/her turn to lead. We'll occasionally turn one vocal mic over to someone playing an instrument, say, for a lead break (fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar). We almost always have an electric bass and an electric guitar.
