Changes

From Paul R on 1/18/2013 10:47:52 PM

I've come to realize that you need to be prepared to make changes pretty much on the spot.

This past night (Friday) I went to the regular jam in Sunbury. It looked as though every musician in the area showed up! It was very busy with everyone finding a place for their instruments and settling in.

One of the musicians, Floyd, hadn't been around in ages. The first time I sang "Aragon Mill" at the jam, long ago, he stepped up to a mic and sang harmony. So, I decided to replace one of my songs, asked him if he'd like to sing it, and dug "Aragon Mill" out of my binder.

It's not the first time I've done that, and I'm sure other singers have switched. Sometimes someone gets up and sings the song you were going to do, and you have to change your plans on the spot.

So sometimes you're busy picking songs and getting in lots of practice just to have to go to something else that you hadn't rehearsed

Well, at least my banjo song didn't get changed. I did "Glendale Train" first, and it was lots of fun. One of the fiddlers said he liked the banjo but couldn't hear it that well (maybe that's why it sounded good to him?). I said I thought it might have been too loud (clawhammer on a bluegrass banjo), so I backed off the instrument mic.

Another bonus to singing "Aragon Mill" is the fact that our steel guitar player likes it a lot. He was at the back, but came hurrying up to his instrument when the song started, in time to play a solo. He changed his plans on the spot, too.
