Where? To playing on the street at the Princess Street Promenade - that's where.
We have a very unique record store here in Kingston, Brian's Record Option. You can find everything on 33 1/3 rpm there. It's like walking into someone's basement (or attic) and squeezing past incredible musical clutter. And, in that chaos, Brian can find what you're looking for.
So ... I'd been telling Brian about the jams I go to. And he hired a kid who has a band. And he knows lots of musical people. So he got the idea of getting musicians to play during the Promenade, the one day that Princess Street is closed to traffic and everyone can walk on the road. the block he's on doesn't get many people (they continue down to the busier section), so maybe some music will help.
Well, he got a bunch of musical volunteers. I said I'd start things at ten in the morning, and I did. My set ended up being about forty minutes (longer than planned). I played banjo and guitar Young Owen, from the jam, backed me up on banjo and guitar (we traded off). We even did a number on both banjos. Emily, Owen's friend and band-mate, also from the jam, sang the last three songs. We ended up doing "I'll Fly Away" with harmony. It's fun just putting yourself out there. Maybe next year we'll do it bigger.
