How soon we forget.

From phdm on 4/17/2020 12:29:29 PM

Just happened to check back in to this group blog on Pete Seeger and was saddened to see that the last entry was 11 months about by me, noting Pete's 100th birthday.  It has always struck me that Pete's banjo playing has never been fully appreciated and was overshadowed by his political persona.  No updated books doing an analysis of his playing, which was far more sophisticated than many banjo players know.  So I guess I'll just keep on playing my long neck Vega and singing many of the songs he spent 75+ years singing, preserving and passing on to us.  Thanks Pete.

In his instructional book and album he displayed a variety of styles that, to my knowledge, no one else had. And I would encourage you to use the folk style that Pete so espoused and see if you can "steal or borrow" and expand upon Pete's 75 year singing vocabulary. He was doing that up till the end. Also, I will ask you, what has happened to his homestead. If some of his family is not living there, I thought it would be a great museum for Pete site. Thanks, ken

Great topic. Why don't you start a thread in one of the main BHO sections, so it's easier to give long-winded responses? I have some definite ideas on this topic, but I find it a little difficult to post much in these groups.

I'll see what I can do to start this thread again in the main BHO section. Thanks.

You make a great point. Seegers’ contribution to the banjo is respected but Scruggs style and clawhammer get the press. Pete invented the long neck but most people are not aware of this. But Pete was about so much more than the banjo. And that is why I think many writings about Pete gravitate to those other issues. It would be necessary to stay focused on the banjo with regard to Pete. I’d like to see a book just about Pete and the banjo.

Several years ago, I had brief email contact the Pete Wernick and Tony Trischka (sp?), inquiring if they would be interested in working on an updated Seeger banjo book, but, not surprisingly, they were interested but busy. Tony has done some tabs of Pete's playing, but not a comprehensive study, I believe. It is amazing to me that Pete's banjo playing has been so overlooked.

OK, I posted a new start for this discussion on the general BHO site, under Playing styles - Old Time, Clawhammer and others - the closest general topic site I could find. (Which, of course, makes my point that Pete's playing is generally overlooked. Hope you all can find it. Peter

Actually, there have been periodic mentions of Pete's banjo book and playing in various threads about different playing styles, most often in the old time/clawhammer section.

Hobo's Lullaby
Linked by Marc Nerenberg 9 years ago: Hobo's Lullaby is a song by "The Texas Drifter" (Goebel Reeves) who was a one-time hobo, turned country singer who specialized in songs about hobos. I first heard this song sung by Pete Seeger.
