I have used guitar pegs on banjos and they work fine. I currently have 5 fender tuners, that are meant to be all on one side, so my next banjo will have to be different! They cost me $4 at an antique fair and were too good to pass up!

The main (obvious) difference is that banjo tuners use planetary gears and guitar tuners use worm gears. The guitar tuners are "right angle" tuners meaning that the tuning shaft is at right angles to the string shaft. The planetaries are concentric. The other main difference is gear ratios: virtually all banjo tuners are 4:1, meaning 4 turns of the knob results in one turn of the string shaft. Guitar tuners are 12:1, 14:1, or even higher gear ratios. This both an advantage (easier, more precice tuning) and disadvantage (a lot more knob turning to re-tune to a different tuning). I like guitar tuners ok for slotted peghead designs but dislke their appearance on a traditional banjo peghead profile such as fiddle-cut.
