Greater PDX Luthiers

From Quartermaster James on 1/11/2012 7:19:16 AM

Hey folks,

One of my beloved banjos has enough fret wear that I know a refretting is in it's future. Though (thankfully)  it's not an immediate requirement, I'd like to start gathering input on local luthiers. So, what yall say? Do you have any recommendations, horror stories, or the like?

I had a Deering Maple Blossom worked on by Portland Fret Works a month ago. They leveled, crowned and polished the frets and replaced the first three. They did an excellent job. The neck looked like new and it played and sounded wonderful. I have the folks at Portland Fret Works do all my banjo work and I highly recommend them.

Banjo maker Vern Marr in Pendleton is very good with very reasonable fees.

The Oregonian did a nice article on him a bit back:

I had my custom banjo setup by Barrett Coughlan in Lake Oswego (guitarwhiz45.com/). He did a great job. It plays easier than ever, has a better tone and is about twice as loud as before. Although his web site emphasizes guitars, he told me that he worked in Nashville for about 20 years and specialized in banjos. He seemed to really enjoy working on my banjo. I would recommend him for banjo repair and setup without hesitation.

I second CHaynie's comment on Verne Marr. He's made 2 of my banjos and does beautiful work on repairs.
