Uncommonly Strong Tunes for Clawhammer Banjo

From tfaux on 11/12/2013 3:25:18 AM

My monthly entry in the BHO newsletter may be of interest to members of this group. This month's post is a pair of simple Chinese  tunes:

Very cool! For years we'd visit a local Chinese restaurant who's owner emigrated to the U.S. from China as a boy. He brought with him an instrument that was essentially identical to a hammer dulcimer which he would play for customers. I was blown away by the similarities between traditional Chinese dance music and American old-time music.

It was at that time I realized that dance music is dance music no matter where it's origin. Huang hua çao is a good example; played by itself it could easily be mistaken for a "model" tune from Appalachia...

I just checked out Tom's "Uncommonly Strong Tunes for Clawhammer Banjo" #1 and #2 which are also inspiring:

Thanks for the kind words Mike.
The latest "Uncommonly Strong" installment is posted. A French-Canadian crooked tune I learned from fiddler Guy Bouchard:
