Caravan

From Lew H on 12/12/2014 7:15:32 PM

I've just posted an mp3 of my clawhammer version of the old jazz tune, Caravan, over in the sound off forum area.  Although it's an old tune, I hope it's  progressive enough for this audience.  I don't know how to embed the file here, but here's a link to the forum topic.

Progressive is all good, but what really matters is it has teeth! You get a killer tone out of that thing, awesome work.

Thanks, Aaron. Killer tone is easy on this tuba phone. I like this banjo except that it's repro neck was made about 7/8 inch longer scale than is typical. That makes some tunes hard for me, and takes some re-adjustment when I switch from one banjo to another. I've broken some finger nails, and some of my other banjos pick up a scratch noise--sort of like that ugly "cluck" sound that many are fond of. The tuba phone minimizes that sound--fortunately for me.

I'll need to try one of those out some day. That's the only trouble with old-time banjos, there aren't enough around to sample! There's a fiddle shop in Austin that gives me a chance, though they discourage re-tuning the instruments (crazy, right?) and they only sell on commission so what's available widely varies.

Bummer about the fingernails, I wonder if you could get just as good tone with one of those John Balch picks? Where'd you track down that tubaphone, the neck's repro but how old's the rest of it?

I occasionally use fake nails but they just make my nails more prone to breaking when they come off. I think there are a couple of tuba phones for sale on BHO. I've never checked on the exact date of mine, but I suppose it's from the 1930s.
