Re: gig bags

From gsoscott on 3/13/2013 3:12:31 AM

Hi folks, I would like recommendations for a gig bag for my RK-35. I think I want one that offers good protection and can be carried around backpack style. It would be nice if it had very adequate gear pockets. Any experience or suggestions? I would like to order one online and have it home when I get back in April. On another note, how do you people travel with your banjo on airplanes? Any special concessions (packing, handling, loosening strings, etc?) you would think that as an airline pilot I would have that all figured out, but you would be wrong :-) thanks for any insights, Scott

I have the Alpine gig bag that is a back pack style. It offers pretty good protection for a $50 to 60 range gig bag. I like it.

I gave up on gig bags for my banjos. Just too scary and worrisome. Hard cases only. I do have a gig bag for my $100 guitar!

I just repaired a broken neck from an old Rich and Taylor Sonny O model. The owner had the banjo in a light gig bag and the zipper gave out as he was climbing a flight of stairs. The banjo tore out of the bag and went for a serious tumble.
I dont recommend them for heavy, expensive instruments but if you do use one, make sure its HEAVY duty.
This is not the first gig bag repair Ive done over the year either..hint,hint
