practicing rolls and chords im having a hard time fretting string cleanly without touching other strings is this just a matter of finger strength and callouses or is there something wrong with my form?

It takes a long time my friend,try to play as clean as you can,be patient. theirs lots to learn but the one thing i'll tell you that my old instructor told me is ...dont practice your mistakes...if your doing it wrong over and over ,you are practicing doing it wrong,practice is all about muscle memory so keep that in mind , hope this helps.

Do you have a particular song or a beginner's lesson you are working on( I recommend Murphy's Method)? Set small goals, work on something you want to learn that keeps you excited but also spend time on rolls, chords and scales. Start simple like Cripple Creek. Don't worry about speed. Concentrate more on timing. It will get better with practice. Try not to let the big picture get you frustrated... just keep and it and don't give up. In time you will come to a point where things will start to click for you.

I'm using Janet Davis you can teach yourself banjo. Just doing rolls while forming chords with the left hand. Trying to fret the chords cleanly while doing rolls and switch chords confidently before I love to the next lesson. Right now my fingers block other strings while fretting.

Can you position your fingers in a way that allows the strings to ring clear? Once you do, keep practicing that until you can do it consistently. It may require I lighter touch as opposed to pressing your fingers down hard.

when making the "F" and "D" shaped chords, make sure each knuckle joint has a bend, in each finer, of the fretting hand. Any knuckle that 'gives up' and goes flat, will generally lead to the fleshy part of it touching and dampening an adjacent string(s)
You should also keep a hollow depression in your palm, of the fretting hand, as if you could be holding a small marble in it. This will properly place your thumb on the neck. Watching your ergonomics and time, will greatly improve your chords. These tips also apply to any individual fretted notes...watch those knuckle joints.
The only time to flatten them in in making barre chords or partial barre's

What helped me was a simple little exercise done slowly as suggested by my teacher. Start with the F Chord, then move to the D chord, then back to F shape one fret up the neck, then D shape one fret up the neck, and continue up the neck alternating the F and D chord shapes moving one fret at a time. (F-D-G-E-A-F#-B-etc.) I still use it as a warm up one time up and down the neck as chop chords, then with rolls.
