Recording King strange warranty policy.

From CoolBlue80 on 12/30/2013 1:38:49 PM

I own a new RK-35, it is a fine banjo, no problems at all till I contact recording king to see where to take it to have spikes installed, here is their reply with my original email just below it.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your interest in Recording King. Any modifications to it will void the warranty, whether it be one of our authorized dealers or not.

Best Regards,
Sam

Hello, I was wondering if I have to take my new RK-35 banjo to a certified Recording King dealer just to have the 5th string capo spikes installed so I don't void my warranty, I have a local music store who has been doing all my work for years, and I truly trust his work and would like to have him do the job but he is not a Recording King dealer, he is the owner of Victory Music in Denison Tx. Thanks, Mark

So How is one to put a 5th string capo on a recording king banjo and not void the warranty? I still have a week to get my money back from guitar center on this deal, and am strongly thinking about doing that.

I do hope this is not the case in every situation. It would make me think of buying a RK if I could not get spikes put in without voiding the warranty. Hopefully we will here from otheres on this matter.
Thank you for the information.

When I bought my RK-R25 from Banjo.com they did a great setup and installed spikes free...big difference between a store that specializes in banjos and Guitar Center. If the banjo is a good one in the first place I really can't see how you'd ever need a warranty....these things are basically bullet proof if treated right, and mistreatment voids the warranty anyway.

That's not good news. I also bought from Banjo.com, and they also did spikes for me for free. Great people to work with and have played with Hayden in a Jam class. I also feel my RK36 will be all I will ever need, but if I was to upgrade?? Would I buy again from a builder that would void a warranty because of spikes?????
I hope this is a misunderstanding. We definitely need to know!

I sent an e-mail to Recording King Company on this matter and am waiting a reply. Will share when it arrives.

I will post the outcome as soon as I get one, seems it takes a while to get a reply.

Then how do you recommend I put a 5th string capo on this, or shall I return it to guitar center before my time runs out. I really like the banjo, but it is useless this way.

Hi,

Any modifications to the banjo void the warranty so it's up to you how you want to proceed. We are not allowed to discuss any modifications to our instruments.

Best Regards,
Sam

Wow!! Now I wonder if this applies to other banjo's also? Thanks for the reply. Going to have to really think about this one.

Here is another final answer from the Recording King Company. I asked:
Hello:
I have an important question. If I purchase a Recording King Banjo and get another company to install spikes for the 5th fret capo, is the warrantee still valid? What if I buy the banjo from you directly and you put spikes in?
Any response would be appreciated.
The reply:
Thank you for your interest in Recording King. Any modifications to it will void the warranty, whether it be one of our authorized dealers or not.
Best Regards,
Sam
I now have my answer and am leaning on buying another brand of banjo where the company will back up their products. I am disappointed in their policies.

Kinda funny, they don't even give a phone number to contact them, the only person you can talk to is Sam through email.

I read the warranty before I bought mine and figured they weren't going to cover anything anyway. That's why you check it out real good when you un box them. I didn't worry about it and had spikes put on mine. I agree with pastorharry, treat it right and you won't need the warranty anyway.

I agree with Pastorharry and Glen, had her over a week and tortured her a bit, now she will be spiked.

I love my RK36, but this info sure is a "rain on my parade". So much for "Warranty". With the number of potential buyers on hangout, RK just shot themselves in their foot!! Someone needs to take a basic course in "Marketing 101".

I had a well known luthier put 3 spikes on mine and also put a little heavier strings and a 5/8 Huber bridge put on it. Did another setup and it will now knock the bark off a tree...not really worried about warranty...treat it right and I figure it will treat me right!
