Sustain Issue

From Squatty Body on 3/10/2014 11:29:41 AM

HI all.

First, I have the RK 36 and love it.  I have only been playing about 9 months (with a good banjo).  I have changed strings, tried about 3 or 4 different bridges, adjusted the tailpiece and even tightened the head.  I have it sounding the way I like it with one exception.  The third string has no sustain when freted up the neck,up past the 10th fret.  It sounds muted, or like I have some cotton stuck to it.

Any ideas?  Thanks

Squatty

Couple of questions: Did you experience similar issue when you had other strings on it? Is the string properly seated in the tail piece? Is the string properly seated in the nut and over the bridge? Is the string buzzing or just muted above the 10th? When you visually inspect the frets above 10, are any noticeably high, ( a metal ruler or straight edge is helpful)? If everything looks proper in the set up, it's probably a bad string.

Thanks bikeman, don't think I had this issue with other strings, but then I wasn't playing up the neck much when I first started. Checked all your points and can't see anything out of normal. The tailpiece has only 4 slots for the strings to guide to the bridge, so it shares a grove with the 2nd string. That's standard isn't it? Plenty of space between the strings and the frets, but no way can I tell if some of the frets are higher. Don't appear to be with the ruler. I have strings that I will put on and see if that makes a difference. Don't get me wrong, I'm not playing for an audience and I'm sure not complaining, I was just curious about it. I will let you know if it's the string. Thanks for the response!

Bikeman, must have been the string, or maybe by changing them I moved things around enough. have you ever tried the Kirshner tailpiece ?

Delighted to hear that sustain is back . I'm not familiar with the piece you mentioned. I have had good luck with my RK -36 as it came from factory.

Scotty I changed my tailpiece to a First Quality double hump. Mainly for cosmetics but it did seem to less'n any overtones that I had. I assume because it is a little heavier.
