Bridge Recomendations for RK 35

From banjoracle on 3/10/2014 12:42:43 PM

Hi Folks,

I'm new to this group. I just purchased an RK 35  today (my first RK banjo) and will be receiving it shortly.  Anybody got some bridge recommendations?

Jeff

You'll get a zillion opinions on this one, but my choice is the Arthur Smith compensated bridge. Good tone. Good intonation. Also be sure you have a good set-up. My two cents.

Thanks TL - I have set up many banjos including an RK 35 can't remember the bridge I settled on (given the few different bridges I had available for testing), so a set up will be the first order of business when I get it. It just occurred to me, though. Can you trust that the factory set tension on the tension hoop is even, or would it be better to completely loosen the head and start an even tensioning from scratch?

Got the RK36 about 4 months ago and the head was close...but the bridge was on backwards! Had Ritchie Dotson do a setup on it and put a standard Huber 5/8 inch bridge on her...it will nock the bark off a tree now...

I tried a lot of bridges on my Deco King and the best I found for it was Scott Zimmermans Elite Z bridge.

I second the Huber standard. I was already sold on them after trying several different bridges on my 35 even before I had Ritchie do the setup on it. He put one on my GF-85 when he did the setup on that one as well. Both banjos sound awesome. He keeps a surplus of those on hand for good reason.

I use a Snuffy Smith compensated. It works for me.

I just changed from stock to a Sullivan roasted maple on my RK-R36. More to follow . . .

Ive been thinking about putting on a Purcell bridge on my rk35. Anyone have any sound bites of this bridge on a rk35 or have tried this bridge on a rk35?

Banjophobic has a video review of the rk 36 with a Purcell bridge on it. Rk-36 Introduction: youtu.be/BJ0Flv-5oL4
I just swapped out a Sullivan roasted maple for a light moon bridge on my rk35. The moon bridge sounds great to me.
