Hey RK pickers,
I just stumbled across this group, so thought I'd join. I've owned an RK 36 for about a year or so now.
For the money, I don't think any of the RK's can be put to shame. But being the type who is always looking and wanting something that possibly sounds better, I've often considered taking the plunge $$$ and trying one of the 'high end' banjos, ie: Huber, Yates, Sullivan, etc. which are no doubt, very well built and nice sounding banjos.
But I've recently learned some more tips and tricks about set-up techniques thanks to the blog by 'banjoez', and with that, I'm starting to like my RK 36 even more than I had up to this point. I'm beginning to get 'that' sound that i like, and starting to think that i may not be any happier with one of the higher end Jo's.
One reason besides what i already mentioned above for my reluctance at taking that $$$ plunge, is the fact that I'm also probably more comfortable tinkering around with a 900.00 banjo, than i would be a 5000.00 banjo. The tinkering is part of the fun and mystery about the banjo in my opinion.
The other thing I've always wondered about, is it seems that there are just 'random days' when your banjo, no matter how well setup it might be, just doesn't sound good to you at all. Whether that's sometimes our own ears playing tricks on us, or perhaps sometimes a change in the weather or humidity etc., or could be a combination of all those things. But I guess my point is, when a 900 dollar banjo has one of those bad days, it's fairly easy to accept it and move on, hoping it'll sound better tomorrow. I'm not so sure I could accept it that easily if a 5000 dollar banjo decided to have a bad day :-) Lol
So for the immediate future, rather than looking for that 'greener grass', I'm just gonna focus more on making my RK36 sound it's best, and more importantly, learning how to play it better! Lol
Happy pickin'
