3rd string sharp on my R36

From teakinmn on 1/14/2016 10:48:31 AM

Hi gang -- I've had my RK-R36 about a year, and I love it. It's at the local luthier's for a general tune-up right now.  Besides bringing the head back to G# and re-establishing bridge position (I've messed with it a little bit and I'd like it back to neutral!) my jam leader noticed a slight bow in the neck -- hopefully a little truss rod tweak will take care of that.

I've noticed recently that the third string goes sharp as it's fretted up the neck. Whether it's always been there and I just haven't noticed, I'm not sure. I'm only beginning to play more up the neck so it could have been an issue all the time and I just didn't notice. At the 12th is the most noticeable. My jam leader suggested getting a compensated bridge once the other tune-up things are taken care of.

My question is whether other RK owners have experienced this and what your remedies might be?

To add: the other strings stay in tune as they're fretted up the neck -- just the third string that's the problem. The problem remains no matter how I position the current bridge. Strings are Cryo's and have been on about 2 months.

I had that problem to a lesser degree with my RK-80. I put an Arthur Hatfield compensated bridge under the strings and it totally resolved the issue and improved the tone as well.

I use a CatEyez compensated bridge on my RK36 and haven't noticed any issues with my 3rd string. Not sure if there were any issues before, because I switched the bridge as soon as I got the banjo. I've had mine for around a year now too...and just like you, I love it!

Since it's only your 3rd string giving you a problem, a compensated bridge should help. But you might also want to have your luthier check the neck relief while it's in for a check up.
PS, just as a side note - I'm not sure if Scorpion makes a 'compensated' bridge, but I recently got a regular Scorpion and I'm very impressed with it. I've tried lots of bridges and do like some of them too. But this Scorpion stands out and really seems to make my RK36 come alive.
