Roger called today

From Brooklynbanjoboy on 3/29/2017 2:57:00 PM

I just got off the phone with Roger.  After I saw the notice that he had some surgery done - Aorta stuff, as he put it - I sent him a note, and a CD to help him get better.  Roger called today to thank me.  We chatted a bit.  He's clearly got diminished strength after the operation, but he is plugging along.  He will be playing some local gigs - a dance or two around his home.  Roger seems in decent spirits.  I made clear that he needs to eat right, get good sleep, and play good music for himself, but also for all of us.  Loved hearing that great, rich Breooklyn accent again.

Play hard,

Lew

I am flying to Connecticut tomorrow and will be visiting Roger. He plans to be at the pasta jam Saturday night. We will be going together. I haven't seen him in five years so I amay really looking forward to seeing him.

Here is hoping for a quick recovery. Often after getting heart work done you feel tired but when recovered you feel better than you have in a long while. Get better quick Mr. Sprung!

It was wonderful to get to spend some time with Roger and his family. He is doing better but has a ways to go. He actually got out to pick at events on Friday and Saturday night. I think it did him a world of good.

I told Al McCanless that I had given you a copy of his CD, the one with the bold art on the CVD jacket that I sent to Roger.

Here's what Al said:

BEGIN QUOTE:

Sprung was around back when I started fiddlin' and going to fiddlers conventions circa 1964. You couldn't miss him with his derby hat and Yankee accent and mannerisms. But a fine banjo player none the less. He would be at Union Grove and Galax every year.

I was honored that he asked me to play fiddle with him at Union Grove, it was either 1967 or 1968. No big deal for him but it meant a lot to me.

He was ahead of his time on banjo. He did a great recording with Doc Watson on Folkways.

If you talk to him again tell him I send my regards for a speedy recovery!

END QUOTE

I love these little musical connections that thread throughout this network.

V/R,

Lew
