Was curious how many of you have played more than one Blaylock. For example, gold, nickel, 20 hole, no hole, unplated, etc.
i have a nohole gold plated ring in a conversion banjo and a 20 hole beartracks, gold, that is on loan from a good friend sitting on a very special maple rim another good friend gave me to test.
They are both fantastic but I have noticed the BT has a much quicker decay.
Blaylock's appear to be consistent in that they all appear to be great!

I have owned 5 Blaylock rings and still have 4 of them. Like an idiot I sold the PW Style 2 that had the unplated no hole in it.......have regretted it ever since. I have a nickel 20 hole, an unplated 20 hole and the "holy grail" gold plated 405 that is also a 20 hole and one that is.....well let's say an experiment. I have not put the unplated 20 hole in anything.....yet. I have heard all the rest and they are all WONDERFUL! I honestly do not believe that there is such a thing as a bad Blaylock ring when fitted and set up right. I have them on PW rims and new Cox rims, all sound great.

wow, 5. That is borderline a fetish of some kind isn't it? Everyone that I have personally heard sound great. I have a friend that claims Blaylock's are the worst ring out there. I cannot figure that one out.

Obviously your friend plays a Stelling or an Ode/Ome and has no idea what a real banjo is supposed to sound like.....he needs help. ;)
Yes, 5 rings might be a bit obsessive but I believe when you find something good you should stock up on it, but I have multiple banjos to try them in. Bill is not going to be around forever and the chance to own one of his masterpieces has a definite shelf life or expiration date if you will, so while I am not greedy and have no plan to hoard as many of his rings as I can, there will come a day when his rings will be at a premium and highly sought after and I will have the four that I still have. Many will wish that they would have bought them when they could have.
There are other folks that build great components and great banjos such as Yates, but for a singular product like a tone ring, in my opinion there is NONE better than a Bill Blaylock. I have heard them in many banjos both old and new and I have never heard one that I thought was bad.......some better than others but never a bad one.
