Practice goals?

From Judith511 on 11/10/2017 3:48:54 PM

So I have been taking the Bill Evans Beginner Banjo course on Peghead Nation and I have pretty much worked through all the lessons with a oouple of exceptions. Now I have started to do the Bluegrass course.  I still play the material from the other course and there is still lots for me to learn from it .

I am trying to memorize some of them and get them better but at the same time move on and learn new ones.

My question is this....am I better off learning a number of songs or practicing one or two until they are really good?

Judith511, prob dont really matter long as your playing. May be encouraged to practice more if you mix it up and keep from getting bored.

Thanks David, thats the thing it does get boring to do the same tune over and over. Tonight I went back and did some of the ones I did in the beginning that I can sing to. That was fun :)

Don't continue to practice something when bored or frustrated or not progressing significantly. In those cases, it's better to change practice to something else and come back to the thing later.

I have a short list of things I'm practicing which changes all the time. That list lets me have some variety, gives me enough things for a good sized practice session without the whole session having to be on just one thing. Rotating practice through different things helps me to avoid frustration and keeps me interested. It takes a lot of time to get good at music, so keeping practice interesting is important. Whatever it takes for you to want to practice, do that.

As long as you don't use boredom as an excuse to veer away from focussing on difficult areas I don't think there's any harm in mixing things up.

Once you get a few tunes/songs under your belt, maintaining your repertoire is probably an essential part of your daily banjo practice/play.

Thanks Wayne and Andy, I think I will make a list
