Things I find Difficult - Playing with others

From Judith511 on 11/11/2017 5:27:23 AM

I have never really had the opportunity to play with other players. Always played alone so I find it hard to play along with guitar music to a song. Any idea to help?

I have not played with others yet either. I am beginning to enjoy playing with a slowed version of the fiddle track on the book I am working on but it has taken a bit of practice first. Did you know you can slow Windows Media Player by right clicking the progress bar underneath the player? This is a big help to me.

you may want to explore biab, or band in a box. software where you plug in your chords and tempo and it generates backing tracks for you to play with. Great practice tool.

Have you practiced playing along to a metronome? It might be something as simple as timing issues?

Band in a box sounds interesting. I will look it up. Yes I do have a metronome....and need to spend some time getting used to it. I have found lots of great things on the forums....lots to learn from.

I've never used band in a box. There's an app called ireal-pro that I used to play guitar along to. Sounds similar, so have a look at that too.

Sometimes I play along with a slow jam video, lesson video, or backing tracks. The videos I play using VLC Media Player so I can slow the tempo down. With backing tracks, I use Audacity so I can change the tempo if needed. I've also recently started using a metronome during my practice. Keep picking.

I forgot to mention that Audacity and VLC Media Player are free downloads. Here on BHO you can download backing tracks from the mp3 library under Media. Use the advanced search function.

I thought I posted a comment...seems to have vanished.. I will try Audacity and VCL Media player. It would probably help if I could slow down the tune.

So far I've been a closet picker and have only played with others on a slow jam DVD. I recently decided to change my goals as I would like to attend a jam and play with others. To do this, I have added learning backup banjo starting with Geoff Hohwald's Banjo Rythm & Backup Package. The goal is to complete the package in time to attend the bluegrass jam near me on the 3rd Saturday in January. I also have to keep up with, and improve on the 12 tunes that I already know the breaks for. Keep picking.
