Greetings all I feel like I am part of a hangout in The Hangout, way cool. So first post/question on TPG. I enjoy practicing as many of you all do, but what advice do you have for a routine? No real goals, working through Hatfield V. 2. I make lots of various mistakes but not always in same sections. No one to really play w/ that can switch off leads. But mainly curious as to your routines.

Welcome @USAF_Pj! Can you record yourself and play back up to yourself, and then play the main melody and then record so you are doing the lead and play to your own back up of yourself?
You could also get some back up DVDs, I haven't looked into those yet but I plan on getting some for Xmas.
I find setting goals most useful, and doing the hardest thing for me first (after a warm up) works well for me, but we are all different.
I find if I do my drills of rolls, chords and working on learning a whole piece off by heart so I can just pick up my banjo at any time and play it, that that helps me. You will work out your style over time. If you are a morning person and can get in your first jamming and practising early in the day, I find that works for me, keeping me interested, inspired and engaged.
So I would set some simple goals and then work on them each day. It is great to struggle with a piece and then finally get there in being able to learn and play it.
Have fun is important.
Learning to relax is important.
Giving up perfectionism is important. If you learn how to give up your perfectionism be sure to write a blog post and tell us how you did it, we are all in sore need of guidance on that one.
Listen to as much inspiring music as you can - I find that it changes my way of thinking about music and playing music.
Just a few suggestions, the other folk in TPG (first time I have used that acronym :) !

Listening to music is a good idea. I try and practice daily but if something comes up I don't get upset about it. I start with a warm up , do some with the metronome and now I am making sure to use the picks as they are new to me. I go over some things I already know and work on something newer, I need to memorize more songs I only have a couple and tend to read the tabs but Im improving. I read lots on here and have learned so much from here.

Alex, I was hoping to see you in this group. Welcome!
My practices aren't very regimented, so what I do depends upon what I'm interested in that day. If I'm making an arrangement then I'll work on that on that until I'm bored with it and do little else. Otherwise I'll play through a few songs I know, do some exercises, and maybe do use the metronome some. Sometimes I practice cord changes changes or cord patterns. I might not be the best example, but you asked what we do and not what we should do :)

Thanks Kate, Judith, & Wayne. Metronome, not sure if I can do it as it is suppose to be done. Backing track or Metronome, are they the same? I have used the later but hesitant on Metro as not sure about clicks and notes. I do use backing tracks. You know Wayne I keep hearing this voice in my head, says. " I do na suppose Joo cahn speed id up".

@USAF PJ I just started playing with the metronome a little while ago and I just set it at a beat I can play to without mistakes then move it up faster. Not sure if that is right but thats what I do. I have a really hard time playing with a backing track or a recording. It is something I have never done but I guess practice makes it better so I will continue to practice. I am working on memorizing tunes as well so I can do without the tab....never done that before either...learning to do new things is great!

Backing track practice helps learning to play with others. Metronome practice helps to learn to play in a specific tempo. They have in common that you have to learn to play while listening to someone or something else play. But they are different ways to practice. @Judith511, The way you use the metronome sounds right to me.
