Another Tune In The Repitoire?

From pickn5 on 3/2/2018 6:23:42 AM

A couple of days ago I got all 16 bars of Bill Nesbitt's version of You Are My Sunshine committed to memory. I was also able to play along with the slow version of the lesson track numerous times without mistake. I've had a couple of days with life getting in the way of practice time, so today I'll see if the tune is still in my memory. Keep picking.

That is super. It is hard to memorize tunes.

Success, I was able to play You Are My Sunshine from memory. Now working on timing and increasing tempo. Keep picking.

Well done. Much more freedom without the tab.

In Bluegrass do you do more improvising or memorizing?

@Northl there is a combination of both. I believe that the more chords, licks, fretting techniques, and memorized lead breaks you know, the better you would be able to improvise. You would have to figure out where you could substitute one lick for another, one fretting technique for another, rolls over chords, or vamping. I've noodled around with it a little, not good at it, and don't think I could pull it off playing with others. I'm no great picker, so take my advice for what it may be worth. Keep picking.
