So I've been playing for more than a year now. Although at first I was afraid that this banjo-thing might just be a fad, 13 months later, I'm still practising everyday and loving it. I've decided to take the plunge and buy myself a worthwhile instrument (much to the chagrin of my supportive wife) that will hopefully last me forever and "cure" me of BAS. I see this as an investment (you other banjo people understand what I mean). It is a substantial purchase, but I can't wait. In the mean time, I'm a bit nervous. I'm basically banjoless for a few weeks. To fund the new instrument, i've traded in two other banjos.

I bought a used Hatfield, which I know I can resell for what I paid (one of the benefits of buying used, if you are careful). I love my banjo, and playing it is so much better than the old beater banjo. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

After dabbling in clawhammer for the first few months, the past six months have been dedicated to minstrel and fingerstyle classic banjo. Its what I enjoy playing most, so I was looking for a modern banjo with a classic look and an instrument that I can grow into. I admit that its a bit outside of my means, but If I keep it until I'm 80, thats 50 years of enjoyment. I don't really plan on acquiring new 5 string banjos, although I'm interested in taking up the tenor banjo eventually.
