Isn't that the Rock band?
Over the last year, in anticipation of retirement, I picked up a drill press, band saw and table saw. I would love to have a lathe, but money and space get in the way.
Given the nice power tools, I easily can destroy and mangle just about any piece of wood or finished item I handle. ;O))

Both used Metal, and Wood Lathe are abundant, trick is making sure you don't get hosed !, especially with a Metal Lathe. best to take a machinist along for inspection if you are not well versed on the machine. Timken bearings and seals for my lathe are over 500.00, heck probably more these days.
Milling machine spindle bearings, OUCH ! Lotst of good deals on 3 phase equipment which scare a lot people away, but you can build or purchase a phase converter. Buying a new one that is rated for a Bridgeport for example would get pricey as it requires a rotary phase converter ! You basically just have to make sure you not buying a troublesome POS

I and a friend were looking at a lathe, 16 inch swing, 36 inch bed in looks to be great condition, at a great price. Closer inspection found broken back gears, we passed on that one.

Broken? Hmmmm Chuck crash? shear pin should prevent gear damage.... Definitely a good idea to walk away.

No sign of chuck crash, the ways were pristine as was the rest of the machine. Just one of those things that happen.

That just puzzles me, how the heck do you break gears ? Sudden stop is the only thing I can imagine happened, but a chuck crash leaves rather obvious evidence.
You were wise to walk away though.
