From mooweesworld on 11/8/2017 8:56:23 AM

My friend wants to buy her fella his first banjo for Xmas, she has a budget of £250, any recommendations?

Cheers in advance!

Hi,
£250 is a bit tight for anything decent unless you’re willing to go second hand, Deering Goodtime or Gold Tone CC50 are pretty good for the money,

Ozark California..

The California is decent enough for John Dowling, so i reckon it's decent enough for a first Banjo :) I set a California up for a chap that attend's our pick, and i was impressed. Cant really say i have ever been impressed with any Deering i have ever played, and that include's the much over rated Saratoga Star. For the price of one of them you can buy a couple of Rich era RB250's

Hey, dont knock the deering I love mine but they are a lot of money.
The ozark range at eagle are a bargain Ozark 2109G openback looks like a great deal and you also get rolled brass tone ring and double coordinator rods according to eagle. 250 squid is a steal

Yes Eddie, don't knock Deerings, I've just bought a secondhand Sierra which i'm very happy with, I will say that they are a little pricey but I've owned pricey Gibsons that were crap no matter how you tinkered about with them, also i'm not that impressed with the RK's that I've heard so far, they are still Chinese cheap copies to my ears,.. so stick that in your pipe and smoke it Edwardio....(wink)

If an openback is ok then I recommend a Gretsch Dixie Special. I got mine for £200 from GAK a while back. You've got to keep a look out as the price moves....

I got an RK-35 also and its awesome sound and quality, trouble is I bought it with the intention of removing the flange and resonator to make it a bit lighter on my bad shoulder but unlike the deering goodtime where the hooks fit into shoes screwed into the rim , the RK-35 flange holds the hooks in place DOH.

Mine is an RK35. I wouldn't want anything else. It's tone and quality is amazing. Heavy though, but I've sorted that with using a wide leather cradle strap. It's fast becoming my best friend, and I want to grow old playing it.
