Hi everyone

Just started learning clawhammer on a banjo I've had for about 20years. I could never get the hang of it and thought it was just for bluegrass. Discovered clawhammer over Christmas and thought I'd give it a shot and liked it. I bought Wayne Erbsens ignoramus book and I'm really enjoying it. I wondered if anyone knew of any oldtime or other five string get together sessions or similar in and around norfolk. I'm not a native so don't know my way round much even though I've been down here a few years. I know there's plenty of folk nights but never been to any.

cheers folks

Dave.

Hi Dave

I've just started too
It took me about a week to get the basic frailing technique, it's true what they say play slow learn fast

Cheers

Slow and steady. I can thoroughly recommend Dan Levensons 'Clawhammer Banjo From Scratch' book as a learning method. It gets you double thumbing and drop thumbing early on which many players think is pretty important.

Plenty of people have done well from the Erbson book. I attended a banjo workshop a few months back, and was the only person out of 8 beginners who could drop thumb and guess what, that was the thing everyone else wanted to be able to do. I put that down to the CBFS book method. The free Rocketsciencebanjo also teaches very similar but the CBFS changes exercises into 'almost tunes'.
